If you never heard of a cheese boat thats ok your just not from globe-miami. As a kid we made these for high school bake sales and our grandmas baked these for a weekend lunch. We would all gather in the kitchen and make these as a team. All though this is how i make mine, there are a 100 variations of this home town recipe. We always eat some, because they are so irresistible and freeze some for later.
Approx. 20 Minutes
Makes 2.5 dozen Small Rolls or 1 Dozen Large Rolls
- French Bread Rolls
- 1 1/2 lbs of Grated Long Horn Cheese
- 1 oz E Pato Sauce (Or whatever hot sauce you have on hand)
- 2 oz Cans of Diced Green Chili
- 4 Boiled Eggs, Diced
- 1 oz Can of Sliced Black Olives
- 1/2 C Salsa
- 2 tbs. Vegetable Oil
- 2 tbs White Vinegar
- 1 oz Can of Tomato Sauce
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large bowl mix all the ingredients together.
- Meanwhile, have someone else hollow out the inside of the rolls. (Save the inside bread pieces to dip into your tester cheese mixture.)
- Once the rolls are hollowed out and the cheese mixture has been tossed with all the ingredients, and test tasted to perfection, fill the insides of each roll with the cheese mixture. Don’t overflow the roll with cheese, it should be about a 1/4 of an inch below the roll line. You want to do this because it will keep it from leaking over the edges as its cooking in the oven.
- Then wrap each boat in heavy duty foil. This allows the boat to heat evenly and makes it super easy for freezer storage for the rest of the boats you don’t eat right away.
- Add cheese boats directly onto oven rack, cook in oven for about 10 minutes or until the center of the cheese boats are warm and gooey and the outsides of the rolls are crunchy.
- Freeze extra rolls for later, as is. When you want to eat one, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and cook for about 20-25 min until the centers are warm.
* We always take a spoonful of the cheese mixture and melt in the microwave to do a taste test. We will add more ingredients until we are satisfied with the results. Some recipes call for Pimientos, Jalapeno Slices, and even a tbs of beer but this is how my mom makes hers*
